Lesson 10 - Wrap Up

Check out the Featured e-Resources of the Month in th Cornerstone Library Development E-Newsletter.
State Library introduces SAGE Knowledge eBooks. Thanks to a multi-state collaborative purchase, The SDSL now offers 75 SAGE Knowledge e-Book titles in several content areas, including education, social studies, health, and business. - Aimed to academic research, SAGE Knowledge database features a user-friendly interface with full text HTML display and access to chapter print and PDF download options including export to End Note, RefWorks and other citation manager software.
Wrap Up: Overwhelmed is an understatement when it comes to all the information I gathered at the SDSL site. To me, it was an exiting discovery. I spend more time looking at all the sites than reporting. This was my first blog(s) - sorry Julie, creating such disaster. - I got lost in the bulk of information, and didn't had enough time to express myself more clearly. Looking back, I was handicapped and trapped not knowing what I would find in the Electronic Resource experience. Now, together with my co-workers we will digg into all those sites and embrace knowledge. Thanks Julie. for your wonderful support guiding me through the process.

Lesson 9: History and Genealoy

Ancestry Library, Heritage Quest and Sanborn Maps
First, I searched my mother's maiden name, location and my search was negative. With added info I had 12,00 hits. Under Ancestry you find categories: Search; Message Board;Learning Center;Charts and Forms; and New Collections. Each of the categories is fasinating to explore. It was interesting to check the Census Forms (can be downloaded): US,UK, & Canada. Watch a video: The World Memory Project. A fasinating project.-  I have used the Ancestry site before for a patron, hower, this site expanded and more user friendly.
In Heritage Quest, there are over 28,000 family and local histories in their online historical books. Browse the publications and search for one of your family members history.I never used the Heritage Quest before and not familiar with the navigation. There so many publication; it's overwhelming and timely to find what you are looking for. Our staff and I will visit this site later to explore more.

Lesson 8 World Cat

1. We recommend using the Advanced Search screen for best results. Click the "Advanced" tab on the toolbar 2nd to the top. In WorldCat, the right set of search boxes say "Keyword". Click on the drop down menu to see other ways you can search.
Oh, there are so many ways to search for information. You get used to the one you find useful; and that is the reason I haven't branched out - yet. We use this site when we are searching for one special, or odd book we can't find anywhere else. We also receive books (not found in SD) through the ILL loan program.
WorldCat is an international catalog of member library materials. It contains a wealth of records found in 72,000 and more libraries, including the SDSL and 25 and more SD libraries. Records include a varietyof formats - from before 1000 BC to the present. Libraries add new material evey 10 seconds.
WorldCat offers access to other databases, too. These include indexes to books, articles, dissertations, archive material, and much more. In WorldCat, these are found by clicking on the drop down menu next to "Search in database". Most of them are not full text. Maybe just enough information you need.

Lesson 7 Ebooks on EBSCO

I typed in shingles and up came home repair. I corrected my search to shingles, scrolled down and clicked on "shingles in older adults" negative result. Advanced Search, Encyclopedia of Infectious Diseases, and received the answer I was loopking for. Was not user friendly.
2. Back to a new search: Constitution - drop down menu: Constitution of the U.S.- Found 1-10 of 78. Many copies popped up-went to table of contents: part I-V -how to use this book.
3. Western History - Advanced Search: Typed in South Dakota History, 1-10 of 16. - Decided to use "Documents of American Indian Diplomacy: Treaties, Agreements, and Conventions, 1775-1979. Lesson 6 - Gale Virtual Resource Library - GVRL

GVRL - a wealth of information and I had difficulties to stay on task.  I went to "Title List" and selected Dictionary of American History, 2003 - choose a volume - publication - topic overview on Aachen, page(s): 1. Word Count: 209. Synopsis: Aachen: An important, if costly, symbolic victory for the Allies dujring WWII, Aachen was the first German city captured and held by Allien troops. Sitting along a system of German defensive works... etc., etc., I viewed the complete text and it was very interested reading.
At the Home page I typed in "Zinc" and really couldn't find nothing. I searched under medical, food, and more and it was easier to google to find the answer. I know this was not the exercise I should do, but my timeframe was / and is short. To stay healthy your body needs zinc, like: Spinach, fish, Seeds: Watermelon-flax-pumpkin-squash-, turkey, brown rice and more.
Back to the home-page, search box and typed in: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Work overview - full text: so much information and I will quote only the Synopsis: It's a literary work and the novel set in St. Petersburg, Missouri, about 1840; published in 1885. -A boy and a slave flee their hometown, heading down the Mississippi River toward the Ohio River and freedom. For more information you can enjoy 3 more pages - what I did. Plenty of material for the student to finish his project. I really enjoyed the GVRL site there is so much to explore.....

Lesson 4: SIRS IssuesResearcher and Discoverer. I started out to watch the video on both the SIRS Discover and Researcher. The video was short, however the information on both issues were enormous. The left-sidebar on the homepage of Discoverer list an array of features: Nonfiction ebooks; Pictures; Animal Facts; Maps-US and World; Nations and Regions, etc. I printed out a map and suprised how clear the copy was and easy the process. The SIRS Issues Researcher provide the insight into critical social issues. Social bookmarking, note organizers, and a critical thinking skills tutor to support the research process from start-to-finish. The Discover site is designed for grades K-9, and Researcher for grades 6-12. It doesn't make a difference how old you are, the sites are joy to explore.

Lesson # 5: ProQuest

Lesson 5: ProQuest
ProQuest provides access to over 3000 full-text magazines and journals that cover a wide variety of topics. This resource provides the ability to search, print articles or email. On the left side of the home page to find listings like: email search results; create citation lists; create your own account to save searches, articles, alerts and more. Under ProQuest K-12 home page I clicked on Librarian Spot and searched for interesting articles. On the top left corner you can pick what language and I chose German. The article:"Engage Your Patrons with Comprehensive and Ever-Expanding Content" was very informative and interesting. ProQuest is dedicated to provide research solutions, preserving historical records and and a wealth of information of primary and secondary sources. I am looking at a print out: Historic Map Works, who show extensive information on a diverse collection of sources that allow users to discover the physical spaces of the past. There are remarkable historic maps - from big cities to small farms. So much information and so little time to capture it all.

Learning Express Library

Lesson 3 - Learning Express:
The video show you how to take advantage of everything Learning Express Library has to offer. Including how to create a new account, login to the library, move around quickly and search for and use their products, and get help if needed.
Next, I went to the Career Center and chose: Prepare for Nursing School. Under Entrance Test you find the subjects you will be tested. For example: Chemistry, General Science, Math Ability and Reading Comprehension. It's amazing that you can prepare for tests and get help for your weekness in one of the catagories before you take the final tests. What a great site. On the left side: Tests, eBooks and Tutorials. Checked out the eBooks and found soo much information. Everything you need to learn to improve your test scores is right in front of you. Great site, plenty of receources and guidance.
In my years of studying I had to search through books, books and more books.
The Resumes site will be very beneficial for our patrons, who always look for a professional template.
Lesson 2 - Chilton Library, Mango Languages and Tumblebook Library
Basic: Maintenance 30,000 miles: 1st. Inspect the brake linings; replace if necessary; 2nd. Replace the engine air cleaner filter; 3rd. Adjust the parking brake on vehicles equipped with four wheel disc brakes.
2. No Recall notice on my car. 3. Information on brakes on my car: Brake Warning Light- parking brake; Anti-Lock Brake (ABS) - if a brake system malfunktion have it serviced immediately.
Common Core Connections. 1. Students establish a base of knowledge across a wide range of subject matter by engaging with works of quality and substance. They become proficient in new areas through research and study. They read purposefully and listen attentively to gain both general knowledge and discipline-specific expertise. They refine and share their knowledge through writing and speaking.

Lesson 2 - NEW! Mango Languages, Tumblebook Library and Chilton Library

Chilton Library: Our library has those old, heavy books from 1962 - 1996. There are great resources for mechanics and people who like to remodel old cars. I was amazed with the website, and how quickly I could find with just a keyword, etc. I put the website on top of my "website list "because this will save us a lot of time to answer patrons questions.
My car a Dodge/Nitro 2011 required a few items at the 32,000mile mark: replacement of air filter and engine air filter, check the elctronics, etc. I have a great mechanic, who takes care of my car and he is familiar with the Chilton website. I am in good hands.
Mango Languages:Watch the video and was impressed with the detailed explanation and meaning of particular phrase or words. The pronunciation to me is the most important in learning any new languages. The grammar and the sentence structor is difficult in most languages. With Mango you have the "Grammar Notes", color coded instructions, and you can repeat the lessons as many times you wish. The material is well presented and you almost feel connected with the teacher.
Tumblebook Library:  Great animated site, talking picture book, short videoes, and chapter books for any reading level. Puzzles and Games you can read the book in Enlish/Spanish or play the puzzle. Easy to navigate-brightly colored. Story Book provided with a synopsis read online, sorted by tittle, author, reading level or the newest book. Book review: great site for young and old and you can choose - Enlish, France or Spanish language. Great site!
Great resource for after school program, library or at home.

This is another interesting site"The Reference Center" very helpful in learning how to pronounce difficult words (H. Also, the selected articles from the World Book Yearbooks from 1922 to present is loaded with information. The information under the "Computer and Web Tutorials"are beneficial for all patrons who didn't grew up in the digital age.
